A message from the ride organizer Ray Parker from the discussion list, May 4, 2008:
Already, we are nearing the middle of the spring brevet series. Are you looking for a new adventurous 600? Then mark the May 31 weekend down on your calendar.
The "Northward Ho!" brevet is now mapped and ready.
My original concept for this route was to allow those who haven't explored the northern tip of Vancouver Island, as part of the historic "End to End 1000" (Tortoise & Hare) route. The challenge was to make a viable route of 600 kilometres, with appropriately positioned controls -- as with all longer routes -- open at the right times.
Conferring with experienced North Island route wranglers (Thanks Stephen and Ken!), I settled on a course that defies its own title and heads ... south from the hub of Campbell River! After this counterintuitive beginning (on Hwy. 19), You'll turn north at Buckley Bay (on 19A) for the northward trek to Port Hardy, with some lovely back road forays en route.
Accommodation can be had at the Campbell River Lodge http://www.campbellriverlodge.com/ , right next to the gas station that serves as start/finish and control #2. 1760 Island Highway, Campbell River, BC V9W 2E7, Canada (250) 287-7446 Recommend 2 weeks advance notice, so book soon.
Those wanting to snooze in Port Hardy (375km) can reserve at the Port Hardy Inn: http://www.porthardyinn.com/ 9040 Granville, Port Hardy, BC V0N 2P0. (250) 949-8525
A preview of the route is available here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/132182 (note that there will be minor changes and detail additions made in the next few days).
Feel free to contact me with any other questions.
