In our city: Mad about cycling

CALGARY, ALTA. -- Touring cyclists looking for a bit more challenge might like to check out the cycling calendar of the Rocky Mountain Randonneurs, a local ultra marathon cycling club. The club is starting its 300-kilometre brevet training rides this month in preparation for the Vancouver-Calgary ride in the last week of August. The Randonneurs offer a mixture of 200-to 1,000-kilometre training runs, 50, 100 or 150-kilometre rides and point- to-point rides, like one this weekend to Edmonton. The Randonneurs is not a racing club -- the competitive edge is gained by cycling a certain distance in a certain time, which can require day and night roadworthiness. The club is affiliated with the Audax Club Parisienne and its riding calendar is set up so members can qualify for the Randonneur 5,000 medal, which requires a 1,000-km ride within a time limit, a total distance of 5,000 km within four years, and participation in the Paris-Brest-Paris 1,200-km ride, which takes place every four years.
