2012 Archive: Updates

November 10th, 2013 – The next Rocky Mountain 1200km brevet is tentatively scheduled to be held in July 2016 if there are enough interested riders and volunteers. If you are interested in riding or volunteering on the 2016 event, please contact the 2012 organizers here.

July 28th, 2012 – Despite appalling weather conditions for the first 24 hours, 62 intrepid riders finished the event. Another 50 riders abandoned due largely to cold and rain related hypothermia or injury. Thank you to all the riders who came to experience this epic journey and a huge thank you to all the wonderful volunteers without whom this event would not have been possible.

July 19th, 2012 – The GPS route has been update and a link is on the route page. Please note that the official route is the printed sheet issued to each rider at the start. Please also be aware that mapping programs may not be totally up to date with recent road  and road name changes.

July 18, 2012 – 22:00 – We will have a support team at the top of Rogers Pass on the night of Tuesday July 24th to provide water, coffee & muffins to riders between the hours of 20:30 and 07:00 while all other services are closed. This is NOT a control. These volunteers are here to provide water and snacks only for riders who chose to ride through the night from Golden to Revelstoke.

July 18th, 2012 – The location of the Valemount control has been changed. A revised route sheet has been posted on the website. We will post a revised GPS route if time permits. The printed route sheet that is issued to each rider at the start of the ride will be correct. Please note that the route is now 1204.2 km. The only change to the route will be the section from leaving the Yellowhead Highway to arriving at the new Valemount Control and returning to the Highway. All other distances are unchanged.

July 10th, 2012 – The route sheet has been updated on the Route page. An updated excel version had been added for riders who wish to download it. A link has also been added to an updated GPS route version. Please note that the official route and distance will be as per the printed route sheet that is issued to each rider at registration.

The TRU Room list has been updated. Riders are listed by room share in arrival date order . If you have requested a room or a room share at TRU, please carefully check the list to ensure that your arrival, stay and departure dates are listed correctly. If you and your room mate are not reserved for exactly the same dates, each of you will be billed the full room fee for any nights that you are the only occupant.

July 4th, 2012 – The Rider List and TRU Room List pages have both been updated. A map of Kamloops showing the location of the TRU Residences, Wrap Party and the Start/Finish and Registration has been added to the TRU page.

June 27th, 2012 – The Can-Am Challenge information on the rider list has been updated following the results of the Cascade 1200.

The Route page has been updated with a link added to a GPS route from Ride with GPS.

June 22nd, 2012 – All but one rider on the confirmed rider list have completed qualifying requirements for the ride and the list updated accordingly.

The TRU room list has also been updated. If  you have requested a room or room share at TRU, please check to make sure your name is on the list and that your reservation dates are correct.

The Wrap Party will be held JUly 26th starting at 5:00pm following the finish of the ride. If you plan to attend and have not yet confirmed, please RSVP before June 30th, thank you.

Best of luck to all the riders participating in the Cascade 1240 this weekend! Your Can-Am medal will be waiting for you at the Wrap Party after completion of the Rocky Mountain 1200.

June 17th, 2012 – The rider list has been updated to reflect recently received qualifying information submitted by several riders. The note to the far right of the list “R” indicates that the rider is planning to ride a recumbent. If there are any additional special bikes that we have not noted, please let us know and we will add them to the list.

The volunteer information on the various controls has also been updated this week with the addition of two volunteers for Valemount and the loss of one each from Lake Louise and Armstrong. If you would like to be a part of this special event but are not able to ride, we would be delighted to have your help as a volunteer. Volunteering is an excellent way to meet other club members and riders from around the world, to share the excitement of an international brevet and to give back to the club.

The TRU Room List has also been updated with the addition of new reservation information for several riders. Please check this list carefully to ensure that we have the correct dates reserved for you. If there are any errors or omissions, please contact us at the email address on the Contact Us page, thank you.

* Please note, that if you have NOT booked your room at the TRU for the 22nd, you will need to out of your room by noon on that day and will need to make arrangements for somewhere to rest before the Sunday evening start at 22:00 (10:00pm). The start facilities will be open for the 22:00 start riders from 21:00 to 23:00 on Sunday July 22nd. The facilities will be closed between 16:00 and 21:00 Sunday July 22nd and again between 23:00 Sunday July 22nd and 03:00 Monday July 23rd. The start facilities will be open from 03:00 to 05:00 on Monday July 23rd for the 04:00 start riders.

We have added a page for the Wrap Party, a casual buffet dinner on Thursday July 26th beginning at 5:00 pm (17:00). We will be sending an email to all riders and volunteers asking them to confirm if they plan to attend and advise of any guest tickets needed. Please RSVP as soon as possible, thank you. Details on the Wrap Party are here.

June 11th, 2012 – The rider list has been updated as of today with several new names joining the list and qualifying brevets completed by many others. All the qualified riders remaining on the Wait List have been offered the chance to register and we are waiting for a reply from the last 4. If none of these riders are now able to ride, there may be 1 or 2 spots available for qualified riders.

We have several new volunteers and appreciate them stepping forward to help out. The control information and volunteer postings have been updated.

The route sheet has been revised and a corrected version posted on the website reflecting the new control location in Clearwater. There is minimal impact on the total distance of the ride or control opening and closing times.

May 28th, 2012 – The Can-Am Challenge past recipients list has been updated on the Can-Am Challenge page. Thanks to John Lee Ellis for all his work in compiling this information from event results since the inception of the award in 1996.

May 26th, 2012 – The rider list has been updated with 2 new names and the ride is full pending receipt of qualifying brevets from several riders.

We took a few photos on the drive through of the route. Among them were these below:

Yes, we saw bears. In addition to the Black Bear (first 2 photos) seen between Valemount and Jasper and Grizzly Bear (next 3 photos) seen near Beauty Creek, we also saw White Tail Deer, Elk and Rocky Mountain Goats in the area between Jasper and Beauty Creek. The herd of Caribou was in the Kicking Horse Canyon, between near Field on the way to Golden.

The snow on the Icefields parkway should be gone by the time we ride through there in July however it will still be very cold at night as these are high mountains. Riders will need to be prepared for sudden weather changes and temperatures down to 2º to 4° celsius in the night and early morning.

May 13th, 2012 – More movement on the rider list with 2 new riders added to the pending final registration list. It seems likely that all those on the wait list who want to ride the event will have that opportunity.

We did a pre-drive of the route last week and have made some small changes.

Clearwater – The location for the Clearwater control has been changed from the Info Centre to the Clearwater Convention Centre. The route sheet will be updated and posted shortly.

Salmon Arm – We have added limited sleeping and showers at the Salmon Arm control for a maximum of 20 riders at a time.

Beauty Creek – There is very limited sleeping at this control with room for 20 riders maximum at a time. Riders planning to sleep at Beauty Creek should email the organizers with their estimated arrival time at this control so that we can advise of any conflicts. If you arrive at the Beauty Creek control and the sleeping space is full, it is 128 km to the next control at Lake Louise.  * There is another hostel between Jasper and Beauty Creek. The Athabasca Falls Hostel is located approximately 30 km from Jasper on the Icefields Parkway. Check in is open until 22:00 (10:00 pm) only. Additional accommodation between Jasper and Lake Louise is available at the Sunwapta Lodge (500.8 km) or Glacier View Inn (550.0km).
