2012 Archive: How to Volunteer

If you would like to be a part of this exciting international cycling event and aren’t riding, we would be delighted to have you join the volunteer team.

The dates for the 2012 Rocky Mountain 1200km brevet are Sunday July 22nd through to Thursday July 26th. We selected these dates largely due to a review of historical traffic volumes on the Trans Canada from Lake Louise to Revelstoke. A Sunday start will put most riders through this busy section on Tuesday and Wednesday, the lowest traffic days of the week. The Sunday start also allows volunteers the weekend to prepare for and travel to their respective controls.

In 2008 as in past events, it was the volunteers who made the event possible and memorable for all the riders. Every rider had a story of a helpful volunteer who made the difference for them, providing encouragement or support at a much needed point along the route. It is the wonderful quality of the volunteers on the Rocky Mountain that make this ride so special.

At each control, volunteers check incoming riders into the control, sign their control cards and note the arrival time.  Other volunteers prepare and serve simple nourishing food to the riders and if the control is a sleeping control, volunteers will show riders to a sleeping mat and note the time that they need to wakened to continue their ride. The duties are not difficult but may entail long hours and can be very tiring however it is very rewarding as volunteer efforts are critical in enabling the riders to complete this challenging 1200km distance.

We have a number of returning and new volunteers that have already stepped forward to staff controls but still need volunteers for several controls including Golden, Revelstoke, Armstrong and Lake Louise.
