Mortagne-au-Perche, Place de la République
September 06th, 1971
The first check-point, after about 150 km

Jean Richard, already dressed for the coming night, gets ready to go on. Roger Baumann, the winner of PBP 1956, wearing a red jersey, darts him a probably envious look. He was forced to play the part of a helper because of a bad skiing accident occurred during the previous winter. Behind him, Herman De Munck, the future winner is still talking with his helper. Among the spectators are Alain Arcillon (U.A.F.), wearing a dark blue overall, who participated years later to the New York marathon, and Jean Richard's father at the right margin of the picture.
