Mike's January On the Border Permanent
January 2, 2016
Permanent Brevet #137 "On the Border", 205 km
by Mike Hagen

Mike reported in after completing his new "On the Border" permanent route. He agreed to let his message stand as a newsletter submission. [EF]:

Happy New Year, Eric.

I got it done, although it was a bit dicey the first 1 1/2 hours. Very slow going over the bridges. Several very frosty spots. No slips or falls, luckily, but a nervous ride at times. Needed to thaw my Camelback tubing at the Campbell River Store. After that, it was good. Nice and sunny. Headwind to the Yellow Barn; quite stiff at times. Nice tailwind on North Parallel, but not after Abbotsford, which was disappointing after slogging on the border! Snow along the road side from Abbotsford to the high point on the course at the top of Graham Crescent. Took it slow going down into Glen Valley, but traction was okay. Foggy after Fort Langley and -3 in Pitt Meadows though it warmed up again (a little) by PoCo.

Distance was 202 km, according to my Garmin, with elevation gain 1327 m (not counting the bridges for some reason -- my other computer says 1742 m). Riding time was 8:17, elapsed was 8:59.

I made some revisions to the route. While I rode Railroad/George Ferguson/Gladwin/Downes through Abbotsford, I didn't like it so much. George Ferguson/Gladwin is not in character with the rest of the route. I changed the route sheet to stay on Marshall all the way to Mt Lehman. That adds 1.7 km, and I'll go this way next time -- in February!

Thanks,
Mike
