Pins & Medals

RANDONNEUR 5000 (formerly the "Brevet de Randonneur 5000")

To receive a 5000 pin a rider must complete 5000 km in official randonneur events within four years. This 5000 km must include one ride at each distance in a basic series (200, 300, 400, and 600 km), a 1000 km, a Flèche Velocio or equivalent (Flèche Pacifique in BC, 360+ km), and a Paris - Brest - Paris (1200 km). You will notice that this adds up to 4060 km. Riders can choose any combination of randonneur events (200 km or more) to bring the total up to 5000 km. The name change referenced above happenning in 2007.

SUPER RANDONNEUR

A Super Randonneur is a rider who completes a brevet at each of the distances in a basic series (200, 300, 400, and 600 km) in one season.

RANDONNEUR 1000

To earn the Randonneur 1000 medal a rider must have completed rides of 100, 200, and 300 km plus any combination of other rides adding up to the remaining 400 km, bringing the total up to 1000 km. A rider could have substituted a longer ride for a required shorter ride.

This award was discontinued after the 2003 season but was brought back just before the 2004 season with new, somewhat relaxed criteria: Minimum of 3 rides 100 kms or over, one ride must be at least 300 kms, and a successfully completed flèche could be used but would count only as 360 km regardless of actual distance. The award was discontinued after the 2004 season.

RANDONNEUR 500

The Randonneur 500 medal was awarded to riders who completed rides of 50, 100, 150, and 200 km, for a total of 500 km. A rider could have substituted a longer ride for a required shorter ride.

The Super Randonneur and Brevet de Randonneur 5000 pins are international distinctions awarded by Audax Club Parisien in France. The Randonneur 500 and Randonneur 1000 medals were awarded by BC Randonneurs from 1998 until they were discontinued after the 2004 season. A rider could receive only one of the three annual awards each year - either a Randonneur 500 medal, a Randonneur 1000 medal, or a Super Randonneur pin - but rides 200 km or more could always have been credited towards the rider's four year Randonneur 5000 tally. A Flèche Pacifique ride could not (and cannot in the case of the Super Randonneur award) be applied towards any of the annual awards. An exception to this was in 2004 when the minimum Flèche distance (360 kms) could be applied towards Randonneur 500 and 1000 awards totals.

Here is an additional piece of information about the RM 5000 award. It appears that "flèche de France" rides (different from Flèche Vélocio rides, like our Flèche Pacifique) can be used as distance towards a rider's 5000 pin. Learn more about the "flèche de France" rides here (a page on this site with external links to the ACP web pages.) This statement below was from page 37 of the pre-pbp 2007 booklet.
